Iaşi is the second city of Romania after Bucharest, in terms of population and it is an important city in terms of culture, history and academic life. Home to the oldest Romanian university and to the first engineering school, it is the second largest university center in Romania and accommodates over 60,000 students in 5 public universities. It has a population of 474,035 residents. Iasi is considered as capital city of Eastern Romania's region Moldova, that also included till 1940 the territory of actual Former Soviet Republic of Moldova.
Sibiu is one of the most important cultural centres of Romania and was designated the European Capital of Culture for the year 2007, along with the city of Luxembourg. Oradea is a city in northwest Romania, split by the Crișul Repede River, one of the most important crossing points on Romania's border with Hungary. Brasov is the 6th most populous city in Romania (240,000 inhabitants) in the Transylvania region of Romania, ringed by the Carpathian Mountains. It's known for its medieval Saxon walls and bastions, the towering Gothic-style Black Church and lively cafes. The Old Townhall Square is lined by colorfully painted and richely ornately baroque structures. The Black Church is the largest gothic structure in Romania that got its name from the appearance of its exteriour walls, darkened by the flames and smoke of the 'Great Fire' of 1689. The impressive interior of the church houses one of the largest organs in Eastern Europe and an unique collection of antique rugs and kilims.Brasov is home to one of the the narrowest streets in Europe: the Rope Street.
